Before digitalizing, you need to understand

Understanding the process before digitalizing it

Before digitising an industrial process, you need to understand it.

You need to know what happens, understand why it happens, identify which variables matter, and determine what we can model, anticipate or optimise. But, above all, you need to understand which decisions we want to improve.

That is the starting point for Juan Antonio González Rodríguez, CTO of ITURCEMI Digital.

A physicist by training, his vision combines knowledge of industrial processes, modelling, mathematics and artificial intelligence with extensive experience in industry and digitalisation. This combination enables him to approach digital transformation from a grounding in industrial reality, rather than solely from the perspective of available technology.

From data to understanding

Because behind every piece of data lies a process.

And behind every process, a behaviour that needs to be understood.

Modelling, analysing or applying artificial intelligence are not ends in themselves. They are capabilities that enable us to interpret industrial reality, anticipate its behaviour and act upon it with greater insight.

And here a fundamental distinction arises: data is not information.

Industry generates enormous quantities of data. Digitalisation enables this data to be transformed into relevant information. But it is engineering—drawing on a deep understanding of the process—that enables us to determine which information matters, how to interpret it, and for which decisions it may prove useful.

Technology as a means, not an end

Digitalisation is not about incorporating more technology for the sake of it.

It is about using the right technological capabilities to better understand what is happening, reduce uncertainty and improve decision-making.

Depending on each process, this may involve modelling its behaviour, anticipating scenarios, identifying deviations, optimising variables or applying artificial intelligence to find new ways of interpreting and acting upon the operation.

The ultimate goal is always the same: to turn technology into better decisions.

Decisions aimed at reducing uncertainty, anticipating risks and improving critical aspects of operations such as efficiency, energy consumption, quality, costs or reliability.

Industrial Process Intelligence

This approach to digitalisation defines one of ITURCEMI Digital’s capabilities: Industrial Process Intelligence.

A capability that draws on industry knowledge to connect processes, data, models and technology, and transform them into useful decision-making tools.

Because digital transformation begins long before choosing a technology.

It begins with understanding what is happening.

Technology changes. Understanding the process remains the starting point.
