Design and manufacture of ferrule turning machine

The Iturcemi Group, through its mechanical division Iberastur, developed the design, structural calculations, and manufacturing of a shell turning machine for handling and rotating large cylindrical components manufactured by ENSA (Equipos Nucleares S.A.), a leading company in the nuclear and heavy industrial sectors.

The project’s main objective was to create a robust, precise, and safe machine capable of handling large-diameter, heavy shells during the manufacturing, welding, and dimensional control stages, ensuring the integrity of the parts and the safety of the operators.
Iberastur’s scope of work included the complete mechanical design of the machine, the structural calculations for frames, shafts, and support elements, and the selection of materials and components in accordance with load, stability, and current regulatory requirements. The project was developed following the criteria of Eurocode 3 (EN 1993) and the manufacturing standard EN 1090, with finite element analysis (FEA) software used to validate stresses, deformations, and safety factors under different working conditions.

The tilting machine was manufactured entirely at Iberastur’s facilities, using high-strength steels and precision hydraulic drive systems. During the construction phase, welding procedures certified under EN ISO 15614 were applied, with non-destructive testing (NDT) to guarantee the quality and traceability of all joints.
Finally, the equipment underwent functional and load testing in the workshop, verifying its structural behavior, rotational capacity, and the reliability of the control systems.

The result was a high-performance machine, custom-designed for ENSA, that improves efficiency and safety in the handling of large industrial components, reflecting the Iturcemi Group’s ability to offer advanced mechanical engineering solutions, structural design, and certified manufacturing for highly demanding sectors.
