The Iturcemi Group, through its mechanical division Iberastur, carried out the engineering and manufacturing project for a gas ramp designed to fire up the blast furnaces at ArcelorMittal’s Gijón steel complex.
The main objective was to design a system capable of guaranteeing a safe, stable, and controlled gas supply during the critical process start-up phase, meeting the strictest requirements for safety, reliability, and thermal performance.
The scope of work included detailed engineering, calculation of thermal and mechanical stresses, selection of materials and control valves, and design of the support structure and main manifolds. Based on the operational requirements defined by the client, Iberastur developed the 3D model of the assembly, optimizing the pipe layout, valve and instrumentation arrangement, and ensuring accessibility for operation and maintenance. The ramp was manufactured entirely at Iberastur’s facilities, using carbon steels with a surface treatment resistant to high temperatures and aggressive atmospheres. Welding procedures were carried out by qualified personnel in accordance with EN ISO 15614, with non-destructive testing (NDT) performed to ensure the system’s integrity.
During the final phase, hydraulic tests, dimensional control, and functional verifications were performed, resulting in a certified unit ready for plant installation.
The project stands out for its high level of applied engineering and construction precision, consolidating the Iturcemi Group’s experience in the design and manufacture of process equipment and gas handling systems for the steel industry.
